They pray for us and now we intervene on them when they are ill.
When a clergy member is struggling with substance use disorder, we know that the Office of the Bishop is aware of the issue and desires to step in and take action with a professional plan. We know what to do to mitigate risk and to compassionately help those in need.
We work with the bishop or his delegate(s) to strategically intervene on a clergy member.
The pastoral council and the finance council are key to running a successful parish. Our team works confidentially with the councils of the parish and assures them of the process that we will do to successfully intervene on their pastor or clergy member. We work closely with the trustees of the parish throughout the entire process.
This is a highly confidential situation, and we advise the parish leadership how to navigate this intervention with us and how we can effectively intervene on any situation.
Depending on the acuity level and complexity of the situation, typically our intervention strategy is uneventful and drama free. We prepare for the intervention through direct contact with the chancery, trustees and councils, and then we do the intervention.
After the intervention, we travel with the client to the treatment facility (Hazelden Betty Ford or others) and we verify that the client is safe and accepted by the treatment facility.
Once the clergy member is in treatment, we set up local support from a diocese that provides clergy in recovery to give the client external support.
In the Catholic Church, it is very important that the Chancery office find an interventionist who knows how the Church works and the details necessary to do a successful intervention.
In 2009, Cycenas began working at the world-renowned Hazelden Betty Ford for 12 years before focusing on interventions with Aii (American Intervention Institute). Cycenas knows the Catholic Church and has a passion and love for helping clergy who are in need.
Cycenas works directly with bishops and priests who refer clergy who need an intervention. We then help the parish or diocese (or religious order) on transitioning from a member of their leadership who is struggling to finding solutions and assistance.
After treatment and continued support, Cycenas can assist the recovered cleric return to work with programs in place that will assist in a successful ministry for that clergy member.
This is a highly confidential process and we work with the utmost care to ensure all parties are treated with dignity and respect.
Now you have a priest back in service for the Church who is in recovery and can begin to have a successful ministry again!
The problem is that most people wait too long and wait for higher level of consequences
